Cover design for Ravinas! ("Gullies!"), a book of short stories by Paula Valéria Andrade published by Praga and a finalist for the Carolina Maria de Jesus Prize.

The title is the gully itself. The letters of RAVINAS! appear twice, scattered across the page and cut by diagonal bars — strokes that open furrows in the text the way erosion opens furrows in the soil. Reading is rebuilt little by little: each letter lands in its own place, some in italics, the N in white, and the eye has to trace the crack to piece the word together. It mirrors the stories: narratives that resist linear reading and ask the reader to take part.

Kraft green, rule and ruler. The earthy green background evokes raw paper; a fine rule frames the cover, and two dashed lines — beside the publisher's colophon at the top and the author's name at the foot — work like measurement marks, as if the terrain were being surveyed. The spine carries the title and the author's name in white.

Inside, the landscape. The interior art is a photograph of red-earth gullies, treated with posterisation until it looks almost like painting — the concrete referent of the metaphor the cover renders in type. The flap shows the author photographed at Ocean Beach; the back-cover text is by Jéssica Iancoski.
