It is the "childhood-book, mischief-book, woman-apprentice-of-the-river book" the flap announces, drawn like a children's book cover that isn't one.

A frame of scribbles. The scene sits inside a cream panel; around it, a border of coloured strokes — red, blue, yellow, green — like a child's scribbles that continue onto the back and the flaps. The title in black serif at the top, and the author's name below. The Praga colophon, with its ant, tucked into the right border.

Inside, the river. The endpapers enlarge the scene — the boy, the rod, the fish, the sunflowers — into a continuous pattern. The open cover has the back with a poem from the book and a drawn aquarium; the flap carries the introduction, by Mabelly Venson.
