The embroidered word. The title appears as embroidery in rust-coloured thread on burlap: each letter is filled with a different stitch — cross-stitch, satin, shadow, chain — and the threads linking one letter to the next are left showing, crossing the field like the back of an embroidery. It is the book's metaphor made matter: the poet "makes of the word a thread that runs through the flesh, tacks memories together, mends absences."

Texture instead of colour. The cover is almost a single colour — the brown of the thread on the raw fabric — and all its force comes from the relief: the shadows of the stitches, the weave of the burlap, the irregularity of the thread. The author's name, in black sans serif at the foot, is the only "printed" element, like a label sewn into the cloth.

The open cover. A black back with the author's portrait and a poem from the book; the flap carries the back-cover text by Mabelly Venson. The spine picks up the title and name in white on black.
