Black and white, literally. The book's theme — the relations between Black people and whiteness in Brazil — is in the palette: only black and white, no midtone. A black block fills the page and, over it, a continuous white scrawl, thick-stroked, made in one go, like a signature or a scribble of anger or a line that can't find its way. The reading is left open — it is the letter the white reader receives without knowing what to do with it.

Correspondence typography. The title in black serif, bold, and the author's name in regular below, at the top of the white page, like a letterhead. The TAUP colophon at the foot.

The open cover. The scrawl continues onto the back, now black on white, crossing the author's portrait and framing the introduction; the flap carries the back-cover letter — "Dear White Person," — signed by Mabelly Venson.
